I was a bit anxious as I sat down in the chair and
slowly extended my hand through the partially opened window. I sat
quietly for a few moments ..... what was that? ..... was there
movement in the tree outside above my head? Suddenly! .....
I was
startled by the explosion of beating wings ..... my hand being
driven
downward by the force of the large bird, as he pushed off
with a powerful thrust of his feet. Catapulting himself back into the
air, in a heartbeat he was gone. |
| Half the seed in my hand had
been knocked onto the ground. Then I noticed that one unshelled peanut
was missing. The large Blue Jay had hit his mark and was gone ..... in
one continuous motion. It had
worked!..... my attempt at hand-feeding was a complete success!

Suddenly! ..... in an instant of beating wings and
scattered seed.....another Blue Jay found his mark and was gone! Now there
were no peanuts left in my hand. I was grinning from ear to ear (from this
new-found excitement) as I reached for the bag of peanuts to reload for the
next exciting encounter of hand-feeding my own backyard birds.
This same breath-taking scene was repeated over and over probably a
dozen times, over the next forty-five minutes or so. And Blue Jays weren't
the only birds to visit my hand that morning.
|
| A pair of Chickadees would flutter in and land on
the nearby bird feeder. Then one would hop over to my hand as the
other waited patiently. The first one would grab some food and as soon
as he was gone, the second Chickadee would hop into my hand, grab a
seed and fly away. |

| A pair of White-breasted Nuthatches would follow the
same routine as the Chickadees. One would hop into my hand to grab
some food as the other waited nearby for his turn. There were times
though when I had two Chickadees in my hand, and times when I had two
Nuthatches in my hand, and even a time when I had a Chickadee and a
Nuthatch in my hand at the same time. |

| A pair of Cardinals also visited
my hand several times that morning. Once I had a male Cardinal and a
Sparrow in my hand at the same time.
A male and female Downy Woodpecker also showed up to feed out of my
hand. They would even stay in my hand for as long as a minute or two each
time before leaving.
Even Starlings are a thrill when you have two of them in your hand as I
did..... fighting over the same piece of suet.
I finally had to tear myself away from all that hand-feeding excitement
to head for work.....but the rest of my morning was filled with the
anticipation of rushing home at lunch time, to once again experience all the
thrills and excitement of hand-feeding my own backyard birds. Who
would have believed that all this time, this much excitement lay in waiting
..... just outside my bedroom window!

 | then you will watch as my backyard birds learn to feed out of my
bare hand ..... I will show you what foods I loaded into my hand
to attract the birds away from the feeder to my hand. Then you will learn

bare hand at the window, so they wouldn't be afraid to feed out of my bare
hand. |
